52 Sunrises

Life had been very challenging over the previous few years - getting my health back gave me a 2nd chance ... what better way to celebrate than to challenge myself. One sunrise a week (weather and time permitting) for a whole year, I had a great time with this project and I hope you enjoy the results as much as I have.

  • The Main Course...

    The Main Course...

Barrack Point, Shellharbour .. the cloud on this occasion was doing some wonderful things with gravity waves contrasting an otherwise flat ocean. Quite an idyllic sunrise to be taking in.

  • Fisherman..

    Fisherman..

Kicked off the New Year at Killalea State Park, 'the farm', Shellharbour. Fishermen heading out to the northern headland took a few phone shots on their way past.

  • Departure Gates..

    Departure Gates..

A muted and somewhat moody dawn over Shellharbour - Harbour.

  • Sunrise 4 of 52 - Barrack Point - Waves and Rays

Sunrise 4 of 52 - Barrack Point - Waves and Rays

The perennial cloud bank was again today (seems like it there the whole summer lately) but with the ocean up and a light offshore wind helping out, it was worth the wait.

Sunrise 5 of 52 for 2018, Bi Chromic

Sunrise 4 of 52 for 2018 - Looking to the end of Bass Point reserve with the sun emerging from the haze just in time to meet up with the cloud.

  • Sunrise 6 of 52 for 2018, Dawn over Stack Island, Minumurra

Sunrise 6 of 52 for 2018, Dawn over Stack Island, Minumurra

Hiked down the beach from Mystics for this one ... an early morning storm with lightning overhead and thunder rolling over the surf sure made for an exciting time.

  • Kiama in the rain ...

    Kiama in the rain ...

More early morning storms, the saltwater olympic pool at Kiama offered a good view of lighthouse point with the sun rising just off the headland.

  • Sandon Point - Grey Dawn

    Sandon Point - Grey Dawn

With continuing small ocean and overcast dawn, this was a challenging location for sunrise on this occasion.

  • Werri Dawn Break...

    Werri Dawn Break...

Driving down in the dark and rain I didn't have high hopes for this one - still the brief was 52 sunrises regardless so I unpacked my gear, pulled on my wets and took in the location as the sky lightened. Sunrise was brief but spectacular - easily my favourite sunrise of the year to date.

  • Kiama moments.

    Kiama moments.

A little gutter in the rock platform south of Kiama for this one ... soft skies and small ocean made for challenging subjects.

  • The 'Shallows' Bass Point, Shellharbour

    The 'Shallows' Bass Point, Shellharbour

Raining with small seas the gravel loader at Bass Point felt like a great place to chance to get this one in. With a longer exposure emphasising the shallows, a fisherman on the headland and in a boat off the loader this is one of my favourites for 2018.

  • Bushrangers Dawn

    Bushrangers Dawn

Bushrangers Bay is a special place in the Illawarra, I've had some great times here over the years - it was great to relive those moments watching the sun come up for this one.

  • No Cloud, No Waves and Locked gates....

No Cloud, No Waves and Locked gates....

Back to Bass Point for this dawn shoot - well that was the plan but I didn't count on bushfires causing the gates to be locked, so, after the previously clouded sunrise, I decided to chance catching the sun coming up thru the Gravel Loader.

  • Permanence at Rest, Permanence at Motion.

Permanence at Rest, Permanence at Motion.

Salty tarn at the outer harbour of Bushrangers Bay - Bass Point. This is a tough location to be walking around in the dark with camera gear with sharp volcanic rock interspersed with very slippery stone sections - you have to be on your toes quite literally.

  • Barrack Point Blowout..

    Barrack Point Blowout..

After a less than average night and no cloud predicted I headed out to Barack Point for this one as the geometry was still good for the location. I'm always surprised at the lengths that fisherman will go to ... waves were breaking over the promontory quite often and surfers were enjoying the waves just meters away.

  • Hitting the heights .... South of Kiama...

Hitting the heights .... South of Kiama...

At the start of the Kiama to Gerringong coastal walk this morning... a stiff onshore breeze blowing in my face and large surf on the southerly rock platform I quite enjoyed the interaction of the waves with the rocks and boulders.

  • Fraser Dawn Show...

    Fraser Dawn Show...

With early morning rains on the cards I wasn't too hopeful for a sunrise today .... wasn't I surprised to capture this wonderful moment on the beach.

  • French Curves...

    French Curves...

Another morning storm closing in on Fraser Island, every day here is different ... every day is special.

  • Fraser Finale..

    Fraser Finale..

Our last morning before heading back to the big island - moody, raining and magnificent - the next trip back to Fraser can't be soon enough.

  • Clarence River Dawn...

    Clarence River Dawn...

Foggy dawn over the 'Bendy Bridge' Clarence River, Grafton, NSW - with a heavy fog driving in from the farm I was hopeful for some great atmospherics at the bridge - the morning didn't disappoint.

  • Saddleback Sunrise...

    Saddleback Sunrise...

Headed up to Saddleback Mt, Kiama this morning to catch the dawn show... ended up being a bit of a fizzer with very windy conditions softening the view and the sun not quite breaking thru the cloud layer. Still, it was wonderful being up there watching the Illawarra wake up today ..
